Chapter 25
Eireden
The king breathed a heavy sigh as the sun went down. He watched the fiery orb though it burned his eyes and knew a sadness that he couldn't understand. Though he knew its source. Ella. She stood south and west of him. All that day as Eireden had made his final preparations for the coming battle he had felt her moving. She was like the sun itself. From east to west as the day progressed she had moved steadily.
Why? What was in the west that called to her? The ocean? The sunset? If he had no other cares, that's where he would have taken her. He had seen the ocean once a few years before. He had tracked a wayward fey all the way to the water's edge and the two had stood staring as the sun had set. "That's all I wanted," she had said. "Thank you." She had thanked him because she knew he could have taken her before that moment. He could have taken her before that day, but he had held off and followed her only. And he was glad he had.
Eireden turned from the sunset and looked into the dark of the east where death awaited.
That lone fey girl was dead already. She was not among those that had made it out of the valley. Gamelling was dead. The kind, grandfatherly prince would never laugh that quick laugh of his. Zizis and Sheesa were dead—his sythei family had brought him their remains in a tiny box made of woven grass and insisted he keep them safe. And where was Tissa, the youngest? Her errand should have had her back way before this, but she had not been seen in days.
He shook his head at this. Of all the peoples under his care, Tissa was the least, yet he worried for her the most.
Generai's hand found his. "Don't turn away," she said. "The light is not gone yet."
He turned from the east, but did not look into the west. Instead he looked at Generai, scout and warrior of the Den. Tall and stern she was—until she smiled and the fading sun struck her and then she was beautiful. "You should let your hair down more," the king said. "It's a very pretty blonde."
Her grey eyes went wide at this at first. She then gave a little shrug and said, "Maybe I will. Maybe when we aren't about to be attacked by a horde of goblins. Maybe when I have some reason to let my hair down. Could you think of one?"
"A reason to let your hair down? There are many. I was just..." His words were cut off by a sudden blare of trumpets. Men began rushing to the walls. "It's time."
He started out of the room, but Generai grabbed him, her eyes searching his. "You have time to give me one reason don't you?" she asked desperately. He knew what she was asking. However right before battle he couldn't say no to her even though his heart lay in the west.
